INTRODUCTION ABOUT METROGYL F SYRUP
METROGYL F SYRUP is a combination of Furazolidone and Metronidazole which belongs to the group of medicines called Antimicrobial agents. It is used to manage diarrhoea and dysentery caused due to various bacterial and protozoal infections affecting the gut such as amoebiasis, colitis, cholera, bacteraemia salmonellosis or giardiasis (beaver fever causing stomach cramps, bloating and watery diarrhoea).
It can also be used to manage infections of the blood, brain, bones, teeth and genital areas. It also helps in managing gum inflammation, leg ulcers and pressure sores and manages post-surgical infections.
Take METROGYL F SYRUP for the stipulated duration as instructed by the doctor to achieve better results. Failing to complete the full course of the therapy or skipping doses in between the therapy may not result in adequate infection control.
Before taking METROGYL F SYRUP inform your doctor if you have any liver or kidney problems. You must also inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before taking METROGYL F SYRUP as a precaution.
The most common side effects of taking METROGYL F SYRUP are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain and headache. Inform your doctor if they trouble you.
USES OF METROGYL F SYRUP
It is used to manage:
- diarrhoea and dysentery caused due to various bacterial and parasitic infections
- food poisoning
- stomach infections (such as amoebiasis, giardiasis, bacterial enteritis)
- dental infections (gingivitis)
- post-operative wound infections
- genital tract infections (such as bacterial vaginosis)
- blood infections
- brain abscess
- anaerobic infections (such as necrotizing pneumonia, osteomyelitis)
- leg ulcers and pressure sores
HOW METROGYL F SYRUP WORKS
METROGYL F SYRUP is an antimicrobial medication. It kills susceptible microorganisms by breaking down their genetic material (DNA). As a result, it reduces the severity of the infection and manages them from spreading further.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take METROGYL F SYRUP as advised by your physician. It is preferably taken with or just after meals. Shake the medicine well before use. Measure the required quantity of the medicine in the measuring cup and consume the medicine immediately.
Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending on your age, body weight and severity of the infection.
Do not skip doses or stop taking METROGYL F SYRUP without consulting your doctor as it may not completely manage the infection.
SIDE EFFECTS OF METROGYL F SYRUP
COMMON

RARE
Stop taking METROGYL F SYRUP and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- signs of severe allergic reactions (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, throat or tongue causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
- severe skin reactions (such as widespread skin rash, blistering, peeling or bleeding on any part of the skin with fever, chills, enlarged lymph nodes and malaise or pink or reddish skin lesions on palms or soles)
- stomach pain, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fever, tiredness, weakness, yellowing of skin and eyes, dark urine, pale stools, skin itchiness
- signs of brain disease (such as fever, neck stiffness, headache, hallucinations, muscle stiffness, problems in speech, and confusion)
- signs of low blood count (such as unexpected infections, mouth ulcers, bruising, bleeding gums, or severe tiredness)
- severe stomach pain which may reach radiate to your back (pancreatitis)
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea or vomiting:
Take METROGYL F SYRUP with, or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil-rich or spicy foods. Please consult your doctor immediately if you experience severe nausea and vomiting.
Headache: Â
Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY
METROGYL F SYRUP is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered necessary by the physician. Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before taking it.

BREASTFEEDING
METROGYL F SYRUP is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless considered necessary by the physician. Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before taking it.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any heavy tools or machines if your ability is affected by METROGYL F SYRUP.

ALCOHOL
Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking METROGYL F SYRUP as it may cause unpleasant side effects.

KIDNEY
METROGYL F SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

LIVER
METROGYL F SYRUP should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

ALLERGY
Do not take METROGYL F SYRUP if you are allergic to Furazolidone or Metronidazole.
OTHERS
Before taking METROGYL F SYRUP, inform your doctor if you:
- have a disease of the nervous system
Use in paediatrics:
METROGYL F SYRUP should be used with caution in infants, children and adolescents (aged below 18 years). Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before administration.
 Use in geriatrics:
METROGYL F SYRUP should be used with caution in the elderly patients. Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before taking it.
INTERACTIONS
A, Drug – Drug interactions:
Before taking METROGYL F SYRUP, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:
- medicines used for blood thinning (such as warfarin)
- lithium (a medicine used to manage mental illnesses)
- medicines used to manage epilepsy (such as phenytoin, primidone, phenobarbital)
- busulfan, 5-fluorouracil (medicines used to manage cancer)
- ciclosporin (a medicine used to manage graft rejection)
- disulfiram (a medicine used to quit alcoholism)
- medicines used to manage depression (such as moclobemide, phenelzine, isocarboxazid, amitriptyline, imipramine, fluoxetine, sertraline)
- amphetamines (medicines that can stimulate the brain) Ex. methamphetamine
- ephedrine or phenylephrine (medicine used for cough)
B. Drug – Food interaction:
Avoid taking food rich in tyramine (such as aged cheese, beer, alcohol-free beer and wine, red and white wine, yeast or protein extracts, fava or broad bean pods, smoked or pickled meat, poultry, fish, fermented sausage or other fermented meat and any overripe fruit) for at least 2 weeks while undergoing therapy with this medicine.
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally took more METROGYL F SYRUP, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital.
