Introduction About AMLOSAFE H TABLET

AMLOSAFE H TABLET is a combination of Amlodipine and Hydrochlorothiazide which belongs to the group of medicines called Antihypertensive agents. It is used to manage hypertension (high blood pressure) when management with single agents is not effective. It can also be used to manage the risk of heart attack, stroke or angina (chest pain).

During management with AMLOSAFE H TABLET your doctor will constantly monitor your kidney functions, blood pressure, electrolyte levels and blood sugar levels to avoid the risk of unwanted side effects. Avoid eating grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice while taking AMLOSAFE H TABLET as it may severely decrease your blood pressure.

Before taking AMLOSAFE H TABLET inform your doctor if you have any liver or kidney problems. You must also inform your doctor if you have any other heart problems apart from hypertension (such as heart failure) or have diabetes, severe low blood pressure or dehydration or electrolyte imbalance as a precaution.

How to use AMLOSAFE H TABLET

Take AMLOSAFE H TABLET as directed by your physician. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Try to take AMLOSAFE H TABLET at the same time each day. AMLOSAFE H TABLET can be taken with or without food.

  • severe skin reactions (such as skin rash with itching and redness, blistering and peeling of skin, skin swelling and inflammation of mucous membrane)
  • chest pain, shortness of breath (signs of heart attack)
  • inflammation of pancreas (causing severe stomach pain that radiates to the back side of the body)

How To Manage Side Effects

Nausea and vomiting:

Take AMLOSAFE H TABLET with or just after a meal or a snack. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating rich or spicy food. Consult your doctor if your nausea worsens.

Dizziness:

Try to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any tools or machines completely while you are feeling dizzy. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your dizziness. Consult your doctor if your dizziness worsens.

Headache:

Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.

Constipation:

Eat plenty of fibre rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables and cereals. Drink plenty of fluids. Exercise more regularly. Consult your doctor if this side effect bothers you.

Breastfeeding

AMLOSAFE H TABLET may pass through breast milk. Therefore, it should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor for advice before taking it.

Driving and Using Machines

Do not drive or handle any heavy tools or machines if you experience dizziness or drowsiness after taking AMLOSAFE H TABLET.

Alcohol

Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking AMLOSAFE H TABLET as it might make you feel dizzier and drowsier.

Kidney

AMLOSAFE H TABLET should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

Liver

AMLOSAFE H TABLET should be used with caution in patients with liver problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

Allergy

Do not take AMLOSAFE H TABLET if you are allergic to Amlodipine or Hydrochlorothiazide.

Heart Disease

AMLOSAFE H TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with severe heart problems such as heart failure, aortic stenosis (narrowing of arteries) or cardiogenic shock (inability of heart to pump blood). It should be used with caution in patients having a history of recent heart attack or heart failure. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

Others

AMLOSAFE H TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

  • have cardiogenic shock (heart cannot pump blood suddenly)
  • have severe low blood pressure (hypotension)

Before taking AMLOSAFE H TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

  • have low blood pressure or are severely dehydrated (due to diarrhea, vomiting or excess sweating)
  • have severe uncontrollable increase in blood pressure (hypertensive crisis)
  • are on a low sodium diet
  • have diabetes
  • have hypokalemia (low blood potassium levels)
  • have gout (painful joints)
  • have low sodium, potassium or magnesium levels in the blood

Use in Pediatrics:

AMLOSAFE H TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years) unless considered necessary by the physician. Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before taking it.

Use in Geriatrics:

AMLOSAFE H TABLET should be used with caution in the elderly patients. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

A. Drug – Drug interactions:

Before taking AMLOSAFE H TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:

  • other medicines used to manage high blood pressure or angina (Ex. diltiazem, verapamil)
  • ketoconazole, itraconazole (used to manage fungal infections)
  • ritonavir, indinavir, nelfinavir (used in management of HIV infections)
  • rifampicin, erythromycin, clarithromycin (used to manage bacterial infections)
  • dantrolene (a medicine used to manage muscle spasms)
  • medicines used to control elevated cholesterol levels (Ex. simvastatin)
  • medicines used to manage graft rejection and to suppress immune functions (such as tacrolimus, sirolimus, temsirolimus, everlimus, cyclosporine)
  • St. John’s wort (an herbal medicine used to manage depression)
  • medicines that can depress the brain such as barbiturates (Ex. phenobarbital)
  • narcotic drugs (used for pain relief) such as morphine, fentanyl, pethidine
  • medicines used to reduce blood cholesterol levels (such as cholestyramine, colestipol)
  • corticosteroids (used to manage inflammation) Ex. prednisolone
  • corticotropin (a medicine used to correct hormone problems)
  • noradrenaline (a medicine used to increase blood pressure)
  • tubocurarine, dantrolene (medicines used to relax muscles)
  • medicines used for pain and inflammation (such as ibuprofen or indomethacin)
  • lithium (a medicine used to manage metal illnesses)

B. Drug-Food interactions:

Do not eat grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice while taking AMLOSAFE H TABLET as it may reduce your blood pressure abnormally and may make you feel dizzier, drowsier or faint.

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally took more AMLOSAFE H TABLET, consult your doctor immediately. Overdosage may cause low blood pressure, abnormal heartbeat and dizziness.
