HOW CODIFOS TABLET WORKS

CODIFOS
TABLET is an opioid medication. It works by changing the way your brain
responds to pain. It interrupts the transmission of pain signals
between the affected regions and the brain. It reduces cough by
suppressing the activity of certain parts of the brain that triggers
cough reflexes.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Take
CODIFOS TABLET as advised by your physician. It can be taken with or
without meals. Swallow the medicine with a glass of water. Do not crush
or chew the medicine.

Your doctor will decide the correct dose
and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and
health condition. Do not take this medicine for more than 3 days
continuously without consulting your doctor.

SIDE EFFECTS OF CODIFOS TABLET

COMMON

  • dizziness, drowsiness, tiredness
  • confusion
  • mood changes, nightmares, depression, restlessness
  • headache
  • hallucinations (seeing, feeling or hearing things that are not real)
  • nausea, vomiting, constipation, dry mouth, stomach pain
  • low body temperature
  • blurred or double vision, constricted pupils
  • fast heart rate, low blood pressure
  • malaise (general discomfort)
  • pain or difficulty in passing urine
  • abnormal muscle movements and rigidity
  • decrease in sex drive

Stop taking CODIFOS TABLET and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects such as:

  • signs
    of allergic reaction (such as skin rash, itching, redness, sweating,
    flushed face, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, and/or throat which
    can lead to difficulty in breathing)
  • increased pressure in the head
  • fits
  • exacerbation of previous pain
  • slow or shallow breathing, confusion, sleepiness, nausea, vomiting, small pupils, constipation and lack of appetite

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Diarrhea

Drink
plenty of fluids, such as water or fruit juice to keep yourself
hydrated. Consuming ORS can also be beneficial. Do not consume any
medicine on your own without consulting your doctor. If your diarrhea
worsens, contact your doctor.

Dizziness Or Drowsiness

Try
to rest and relax. Get enough sleep. Avoid driving or operating any
tools or machines completely while you are feeling dizzy or drowsy. Do
not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your sleepiness.
Consult your doctor if your condition worsens.

Dry Mouth

Drink
plenty of water and fruit juices. Consume foods which has high water
and fiber content. Artificial saliva can also be used in extreme dryness
of mouth. If your condition worsens, contact your doctor.

Headache

Rest
and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as
water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead
can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could
aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.

PREGNANCY

TABLET should not be used in pregnant women unless considered necessary
by the physician. Your doctor will prescribe this medicine after
evaluating the benefits of the therapy to the mother and the potential
risks to the foetus. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

BREASTFEEDING

Contraindicated

CODIFOS
TABLET may pass through breast milk. Therefore, it should not be used
in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor for advice.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Use with Caution

CODIFOS
TABLET may cause drowsiness, hallucination, blurred vision, confusion,
fits or dizziness. Therefore, do not drive or operate any heavy tools or
machines if your ability is affected by CODIFOS TABLET.

ALCOHOL

Consult your doctor

Avoid consumption of alcohol while taking CODIFOS TABLET as it might make you feel sleepy.

KIDNEY

Use with Caution

CODIFOS TABLET should be used with caution in patients with kidney problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

LIVER

TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with liver failure. It
should be used with caution in patients with other liver problems, gall
stones or gall bladder problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before

ALLERGY

Do not take CODIFOS TABLET if you are allergic to Codeine.

LUNGS

CODIFOS
TABLET is not recommended for use in patients with chronic lung
disease, breathing problems or an active asthma attack. Therefore,
consult your doctor before taking it.

HEART DISEASE

Use with Caution

CODIFOS
TABLET should be used with caution in patients with an irregular
heartbeat or low blood pressure. Therefore, consult your doctor before
taking it.

USE IN PEDIATRICS

Consult your doctor

CODIFOS
TABLET can be used in children and adolescents (aged 12 years or above)
if prescribed by the physician. It is not recommended for use in
children aged below 12 years. It is also not suitable for use in
children with compromised respiratory function and in children who have
undergone removal of tonsils or adenoids. Therefore, consult your doctor
for advice.

USE IN GERIATRICS

Use with Caution

CODIFOS
TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years
or above). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

OTHERS

CODIFOS TABLET is not recommended for use if you:

  • suffered a head injury or raised pressure in the skull (symptoms include painful eyes, vision changes, headache behind the eyes)
  • drink a lot of alcohol (alcoholism)
  • suffer from diarrhea associated with severe bowel inflammation
  • are at risk of having a blockage in your intestines

Before taking CODIFOS TABLET, inform your doctor if you:

  • have a history of drug abuse (opioids, alcohol, etc.)
  • previously
    suffered withdrawal symptoms (such as anxiety, agitation, shaking or
    sweating) after stopping the use of opioid medicines
  • have any mental illnesses
  • have fits
  • have recently undergone any surgery in your gut or in urinary system
  • are in shock (sudden loss of blood circulation)
  • have thyroid dysfunction
  • have an enlarged prostate
  • have any acute stomach conditions or inflammations that can cause bloody diarrhea
  • suffer from severe muscle weakness
  • have problems with your adrenal glands (such as Addison’s disease)
  • have phaeochromocytoma (tumour on top of adrenal glands)

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug-Drug interactions

Before taking CODIFOS TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • medicines
    used to manage depression such as mono-amine oxidase inhibitors (Ex.
    phenelzine, moclobemide, selegiline or isocarboxazid) or tricyclic
    antidepressants (such as amitriptyline, nortriptyline)
  • phenobarbitone (a medicine used to control of fits)
  • medicines
    used to reduce anxiety and to induce sleep (such as alprazolam,
    midazolam, clonazepam, lorazepam, nitrazepam, diazepam, temazepam)
  • medicines used for diarrhoea (Ex. loperamide, kaolin)
  • medicines used to manage hypertension (such as atenolol, propranolol, amlodipine, telmisartan, olmesartan etc.)
  • cimetidine (a medicine used to manage stomach ulcers)
  • ciprofloxacin (a medicine used to manage bacterial infection)
  • metoclopramide or domperidone (used to manage nausea and vomiting)
  • mexiletine or quinidine (used to manage irregular heartbeats)
  • medicines used to manage HIV infection (such as ritonavir)
  • medicines to manage allergic conditions (such as cetirizine, levocetirizine)
  • atropine (a medicine used to restore heart rate and control body secretions and muscle movements)
  • chlorpromazine (used to manage mental illnesses)
  • anaesthetics (used to cause numbness or loss of consciousness) such as lidocaine, sevoflurane, halothane
  • opioid antagonists (such as buprenorphine, naltrexone, naloxone) used to reverse the effects of opioids

B. Drug – Food interactions:

CODIFOS TABLET can be taken with or without meals.

Overdosage:

If
you or anyone else accidentally took more CODIFOS TABLET, consult your
doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital. Symptoms of overdose
may include nausea, vomiting, depression, low blood pressure,
constricted pupils, fast heart rate and slow breathing.
