Introduction About PENTASA 1GM ENEMA

PENTASA 1GM ENEMA contains Mesalamine which belongs to the group of medicines called Salicylates. PENTASA 1GM ENEMA is used to manage inflammation of gut caused by conditions such as ulcerative colitis which is a type of chronic inflammatory bowel disease that affects last part of colon and rectum (back passage) in affected individuals.

PENTASA 1GM ENEMA is not recommended for use in patients allergic to Mesalamine, salicylates (such as acetylsalisylic acid), and/or sulphasalazine. It is also not recommended for use in patients with serious kidney and liver disease.

PENTASA 1GM ENEMA should be used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women only if it is clearly necessary. It is not recommended for use children and adolescents (aged below 18 years) and is advised to be used with caution in elderly patients (aged above 65 years) after consulting the doctor.

The most common side effects of using PENTASA 1GM ENEMA are abdominal pain, nausea/vomiting, diarrhoea, rash, headache, rectal discomfort, and/or irritation at the site of application. Consult your doctor if any of these symptoms worsens.

How PENTASA 1GM ENEMA Works

PENTASA 1GM ENEMA works by suppressing the production of prostaglandins (chemical messengers responsible for inflammation in the intestines) which results in reduced inflammation and ulceration thus providing relief from ulcerative colitis (and its associated symptoms) in affected individuals.

How to use PENTASA 1GM ENEMA

Administer PENTASA 1GM ENEMA as advised by your physician. It is for rectal use only. Empty your bowels (if necessary) before use and wash your hands. Shake the bottle for atleast 30 seconds. Remove the protective cap from the applicator and hold the bottle by its upper end. Lie down on your left side with your left leg outstretched and your right leg bent. Insert the applicator (coated with a lubricant) for easy insertion into the rectum. Hold the bottle pointed towards your navel and squeeze it gently. Remove the applicator from the rectum when the bottle is empty. Maintain this position for at least 30 minutes and allow the medicine to spread throughout the lower part of the large intestine. Wash your hands (after use) and avoid emptying your bowel until next morning. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.

Side Effects Of PENTASA 1GM ENEMA

Common

  • abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, flatulence
  • headache
  • rash
  • rectal discomfort
  • irritation at the site of application

Rare

  • signs of inflammation of heart (myocarditis/pericarditis) such as shortness of breath, chest pain, rapid/irregular heart beats
  • signs of inflammation of the pancreas such as back/stomach pain
  • dizziness
  • photosensitivity (increased sensitivity of your skin to sun and ultraviolet light)

Stop taking PENTASA 1GM ENEMA and consult your doctor immediately in case you experience:

  • serious skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis associated with symptoms such as reddish non-elevated, target-like/circular patches on the trunk associated with central blisters, skin peeling, ulcers of eyes, nose, mouth, throat, and/or genitals
  • signs of allergic reaction such as difficulty in breathing/wheeziness, itching, skin rashes, and/or swelling of the face/lips/throat
  • signs of blood disorder such as unexplained bleeding, bruising, skin rashes, fever, and/or sore throat
  • signs of kidney problems such as change in the colour/amount of produced urine produced
  • suddenly developed abdominal cramps/pain, fever, severe headache, and/or rash

How To Manage Side Effects

Nausea and vomiting:

Use PENTASA 1GM ENEMA just after a meal. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods, sugary snacks and drinks. Avoid drinking too much liquid along with your meals, drink slowly in between meals. Inform your doctor if the condition worsens.

Diarrhoea:

Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated. Try to avoid taking any medicine on your own to manage diarrhea. Consult and inform your doctor if the symptom worsens.

Headache:

If PENTASA 1GM ENEMA causes headache, then take rest and drink plenty of fluids. Try to avoid drinking alcohol. Ask your doctor to recommend a painkiller. Headaches should usually go away after the first week of using PENTASA 1GM ENEMA. If it lasts more than a week or severe, inform your doctor.

Dizziness:

Try to rest and get enough sleep. Try to avoid driving or operating any tools or machines while you feel dizzy. Limit consumption of alcohol, as it can aggravate dizziness. Consult and inform your doctor if the symptom worsens.

PENTASA 1GM ENEMA should be used with caution during pregnancy and in women planning for pregnancy only if it is clearly necessary. Consult your doctor before using PENTASA 1GM ENEMA.

Breastfeeding

PENTASA 1GM ENEMA should be used with caution in breastfeeding women only if it is necessary, since newborn may develop allergic reactions after breastfeeding. Consult your doctor before using the medicine.

Driving and Using Machines

PENTASA 1GM ENEMA is unlikely to affect your ability to drive and/or operate machines. Consult your doctor before using PENTASA 1GM ENEMA.

Kidney

PENTASA 1GM ENEMA is not recommended for use in patients with severe kidney problems. It should be used with caution in patients who have/had mild to moderate kidney disease. Consult your doctor before using PENTASA 1GM ENEMA.

Liver

Allergy

Do not take PENTASA 1GM ENEMA if you are allergic to Mesalamine, salicylates, sulfasalazine, and/or any other ingredients of this medicine.

Lungs

Others

Interactions

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

Before using PENTASA 1GM ENEMA, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

  • azathioprine (used after transplantations or to manage autoimmune diseases)
  • mercaptopurine, thioguanine (medicines used to manage leukaemia)
  • medicines used to manage blood clotting (Ex. warfarin)
  • non- steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (medicines used to reduce fever and provide relief from pain) Ex. ibuprofen, diclofenac, ketorolac

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally administers too much of PENTASA 1GM ENEMA, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital to manage overdose symptoms.
