INTRODUCTION
ALTONIL 5 contain melatonin which belongs to a group of medicine called melatonin receptor agonists. It is used to manage jetlag in adults. Jetlag is a sleep disorder that can affect those who travel quickly across multiple time zone. It is a temporary sleep disorder. It occurs when the body’s internal clock is out of sync with the new time zone.
Jetlag can be recognized by sleep disturbance, daytime tiredness, fatigue, mild mental impairment, irritability and digestive system disturbance experienced after flying. The most common side effects of ALTONIL 5 are headache and drowsiness. This medicine is strictly not recommended for use in children and adolescents under 18 years. Before taking this medicine tell your doctor if you have ever had kidney disease, heart disease, liver problems. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before taking this medicine.

HOW ALTONIL 5 WORKS
ALTONIL 5 is a hormone produced by the body that synchronizes the body’s biological day-and-night rhythm. The biological rhythm can be disturbed by travelling across time zones. This is known as jetlag. The symptom and their severity vary between individual but are generally worse and last longer the more time zones are crossed. It can help restore the normal day-and-night rhythm and reduce the symptoms.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Always take ALTONIL 5 exactly as your doctor has told you. This medicine must be taken at bedtime. Try to take this medicine at the same time each day. It should be swallowed whole with water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.

SERIOUS
- reduced number of white blood cells in the blood
- reduced number of blood platelets
- disorientation
- fainting
- visual impairment including blurred vision
- feeling your heartbeat (pounding chest)

COMMON
- headache
- drowsiness
RARE
- high levels of certain fat molecules (triglycerides) in the blood
- altered mood, aggression, increased sex drive
- memory impairment, restless legs syndrome, pins and needles sensation
- watery eyes
- hot flushes
- vomiting, wind, excess saliva, bad breath, inflammation of the stomach lining
- nail disorder
- arthritis, muscle spasms
- passing large volumes of urine
- prolonged erections that might be painful, inflammation of the prostate gland
- thirst
- abnormal levels of electrolytes in the blood
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Headache:
Apply hot or cold-water bag on your head. Take rest in a quiet and dark room. Drink tea or coffee.
Vomiting:
Try taking this medicine with, or just after, a meal or snack and stick to simple meals and do not eat rich or spicy food.
Bloating or wind:
Eat smaller and frequent meals. Eat and drink slowly, and exercise regularly. If the symptom gets worse, contact your doctor straight away.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any machine while taking this medicine as it may cause drowsiness and decrease alertness.
ALCOHOL
Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during management with ALTONIL 5.
KIDNEY
ALTONIL 5 should be used with caution in patients suffering from active kidney diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
LIVER
ALTONIL 5 should be used with caution in patients suffering from liver function impairment or active liver diseases. Consult your doctor for advice.
ALLERGY
Do not take ALTONIL 5 if you are allergic (hypersensitive) to melatonin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
OTHERS
Tell your doctor if you have or had a condition such as,
- have epilepsy
- have an autoimmune disease
- have diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance
- smoke
INTERACTIONS
Talk to your doctor if you are taking,
- fluvoxamine (used to manage depression and obsessive-compulsive disorders)
- psoralens (used to manage skin disorders such as psoriasis)
- cimetidine (used to manage stomach problems such as ulcers)
- estrogens (used in contraceptive or hormone replacement preparation)
- quinolones, rifampicin (used to manage bacterial infections)
- carbamazepine (used to manage epilepsy)
- benzodiazepines and non-benzodiazepine hypnotics such as midazolam, temazepam, and zaleplon, zolpidem, zopiclone (used to induce sleep)
- anticoagulants such as warfarin
