NTRODUCTION

FUNGISOME 25MG contains Amphotericin B which
belongs to the group of medicines called Anti-fungals. It is used in the
management of serious infections caused by fungi or yeasts and
leishmaniasis (parasitic diseases). Fungal infection is a disease caused
by fungus that enters the skin, spreads into tissue, bones or other
parts of the body and it is characterized by symptoms such as rash,
itching, skin darkening, and loss of skin colour.

HOW FUNGISOME 25MG WORKS

FUNGISOME
25MG effectively heals fungal infections by acting either as a
fungicidal (destroys the fungi) or fungistatic (stops the growth of
fungi). It acts by attaching itself to the fungal hormone (ergosterol)
which causes breakdown resulting in fungal cell death.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

FUNGISOME
25MG will be given to you only by a doctor or a nurse into a vein as an
intravenous infusion. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and
duration for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease
condition.

SIDE EFFECTS OF FUNGISOME 25MG

COMMON

  • reduced count of red blood cells (anemia)
  • feeling tired, confused
  • muscle weakness or cramps
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • fever, chills and shivering
  • faster heart rate
  • breathing difficulties
  • low blood pressure (headache, dizziness)
  • diarrhea
  • skin rash
  • abdominal pain
  • decreased appetite
  • chest and back pain
  • pain at the site of injection (swollen veins, blood clot may be present)
  • abnormal urine production (increased frequency), kidney stones

UNCOMMON

  • irregular heartbeat
  • numbness
  • shortness of breath (spasm of lungs)
  • yellowing of the eyes and skin
  • muscular pain
  • flushing
  • severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)
  • seizures, fits (convulsions)
  • difficulty in breathing associated with wheezing
  • bleeding for a long time after an injury, bleeding into skin, bruising

RARE

  • blood clotting problems
  • confusion, memory loss, disorientation, loss of alertness
  • blurred or double vision
  • loss of hearing, sensation of ringing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • spinning sensation, off balance (vertigo)
  • heart attack (acute chest pain, sweating, fainting) or heart not working properly
  • high blood pressure
  • shock (rapid, shallow breathing, cold skin, weak pulse, dizziness, fainting)
  • inflammation and fluid in the lungs
  • stomach cramps, indigestion
  • intestinal bleed (black stool)
  • loss of liver function
  • itching
  • flu like symptoms
  • skin
    conditions (skin coming off in layers, painful red or purple spreading
    rash, a flat red area on the skin that is covered with small bumps)
  • joint pain
  • loss of weight

Inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • swelling of the lips, face and tongue
  • skin reactions (severe rash and itching)
  • difficulty in breathing
  • fever, chills, sore throat, ulcers in mouth or throat
  • unusual bleeding or bruises
  • increased thirst
  • increased frequency and volume of urine

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Diarrhoea:

Drink
lots of fluids, such as water or fruit juice to keep yourself hydrated.
If the symptom does not improve consult your doctor.

Stomach pain:

Try
to rest and relax. Eat and drink slow or try to have smaller and
frequent meals. Keep a heat pad on your stomach. If the symptom does not
improve, contact your doctor.

Decreased appetite:

Eat
when you feel hungry. Eat smaller meals frequently than usual. Snack
only when you’re hungry. Eat a nutritious snack which is rich in
calories and protein, such as dried fruit and nuts. Consult your doctor
if the symptom does not improve.

Tiredness:

Drink
plenty of fluid and eat balanced diet and frequent meals. Follow
regular sleep schedule. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not
improve.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

FUNGISOME 25MG should be received with caution in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

BREASTFEEDING

FUNGISOME 25MG should be received with caution in breastfeeding women. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

FUNGISOME 25MG should not affect your ability to drive. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

KIDNEY

FUNGISOME
25MG should be received with caution in patients with kidney disease
such kidney failure and are having dialysis. Consult your doctor before
receiving it.

LIVER

FUNGISOME 25MG should be received with caution in patients with liver disease. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

ALLERGY

Tell your doctor before receiving FUNGISOME 25MG if you are allergic to Amphotericin B.

OTHERS

FUNGISOME 25MG is not recommended for use if you:

  • have diabetes
  • have low potassium levels

Before receiving FUNGISOME 25MG, inform your doctor if you:

  • have low potassium levels
  • have a white blood cell transfusion

Use in pediatrics:

FUNGISOME 25MG is generally not recommended for use in babies below 1 month of age. Consult your doctor before receiving it.

INTERACTIONS

A. Drug – Drug interactions:

Before receiving FUNGISOME 25MG, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicine:

  • methotrexate, cyclophosphamide, cisplatin (used in management of cancer)
  • gentamicin, vancomycin (used in management of bacterial infections)
  • baclofen, dantrolene, diazepam (used to relax muscles)
  • corticosteroids (used as anti-inflammatory medicine) Ex. beclomethasone, prednisolone
  • digoxin (used to manage heart failure)
  • flucytosine (used to manage fungal infections)
  • pentamidine (used to manage pneumonia in people with AIDS and leishmaniasis)
  • medicines used to supress the immune system (Ex. ciclosporin, tacrolimus)
  • medicines that increase the amount of urine your body produces (Ex. furosemide)
  • medicines used to control the amount of corticosteroids produced by body (Ex. corticotropin)

Overdosage:

FUNGISOME
25MG will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a
hospital, and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult
your doctor or nurse if you experience any unusual symptoms.

Can FUNGISOME 25MG cause anaemia?

Yes.
FUNGISOME 25MG can cause anaemia by supressing the erythropoietin
production. However, these levels- may remain low during the management
and get back to normal after the management course.
