ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION contains Isoflurane which belongs to a group of medicines known as General Anaesthetics. ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION is used for induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia during surgeries.
General Anaesthesia can be defined as a state of controlled unconsciousness. There is temporary reduction in activity of central nervous system in brain which in result causes complete loss of sensation in body and loss of consciousness, which is required during surgery.
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION is not recommended for use in patients with or family history of rapid rise in body temperature during anaesthesia (a condition known as malignant hyperthermia). ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION should be used with caution in patients having liver, heart, kidney or lung problems, increased intracranial pressure, myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness) or diabetes.
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless it is clearly necessary. ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION should be used with caution in breastfeeding women as it is not known whether it passes through the breast milk. ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION should be used with caution in children so, consult your child’s doctor for advice.
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION should be used with caution in elderly patients aged above 65 years. The most common side effects of using ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION are agitation, breath holding, chills or shivering, cough, change in mental abilities, spasm of vocal cords, nausea and vomiting. Consult your physician in case any of the symptoms worsen.

ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION is a general anaesthetic that works by temporarily reducing the activity of the body’s central nervous system. This leads to complete loss of sensation in the body, including loss of consciousness and allowing surgery to be carried out without any pain or distress.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION is administered by your doctor through a vaporizer. Your doctor will decide the exact dose and duration of management for you depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition and the type of operation you are having and when ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION is to be given.
SIDE EFFECTS OF ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION
COMMON
- agitation
- breath holding
- chills/shivering
- cough, spasm of voice box
- change in mental abilities
- nausea, vomiting
UNCOMMON
- mood changes, nightmare
- fits
- retching
- high blood pressure causing headache, altered vision, nausea, vomiting
- low blood pressure (light-headedness, especially when getting up from a lying or sitting position)
RARE
If you or your child suffer from any of the following side effects after an operation, tell your doctor or anaesthetist immediately:
- feel shivery, nausea, vomiting
- allergic reaction like skin rash or swelling of the face
- malignant hyperthermia (high fever, muscle rigidity, tachycardia, tachypnoea, cyanosis, arrhythmias, unstable blood pressure)
- fall in blood pressure
- increase in blood potassium levels (abnormality of heart rhythm in children during the postoperative period)
- difficulty breathing (bronchospasm)
- increased heart rate and irregular heartbeats
- increase in white blood cells, blood glucose, blood levels of certain enzymes and other blood cells
- agitation, delirium, mood problems, mental impairment, fits
- liver disease (yellowing of the skin and white of the eyes, abdominal pain)
- excessive blood loss after surgeries involving the womb
- small changes in moods (symptoms may persist up to 6 days after administration)
- increase in blood fluoride levels (due to your body breaking down isoflurane) with carbon monoxide levels
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea, vomiting:
Take regular sips of a cold drink. Have ginger or peppermint tea. Stick to simple meals. Avoid eating oily or spicy foods. If symptom persists, contact your doctor.
Headache:
Rest and relax. Drink plenty of water and electrolytes. Apply a pain-relieving balm on the head however, contact your doctor if your headache did not improve.
Skin rash:
Try to avoid hot water showers as it may irritate the skin. Do not rub or scratch the affected skin area. Use sunscreen and protective clothing when outdoors and regularly use moisturizers to soothe and hydrate the affected area. Contact your physician in case rashes worsen.

PREGNANCY

BREASTFEEDING
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION should be used with caution in breastfeeding women as it is not known whether it may pass through the breast milk. Consult your doctor for advice.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION affects your mental alertness for 2-4 days. Do not drive or operate machines after administration of ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION.
KIDNEY
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION should be used with caution in patients with kidney disease. Consult your doctor for advice.
LIVER
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION is not recommended for use in patients with a history of hepatitis due to a halogenated inhalational anaesthetic or a history of unexplained moderate to severe hepatic dysfunction (Ex. jaundice associated with fever and/or eosinophilia) after anaesthesia with ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION or other halogenated inhalational anaesthetics. Consult your doctor for advice.
ALLERGY
Do not use ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION if you are allergic to isoflurane, other halogenated agents or any of the other ingredients of medicine.
LUNGS
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION should be used with caution in patients having respiratory problems such as bronchoconstriction (tightening of air sacs in lungs causing coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath). Consult your doctor for advice.
HEART DISEASE
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION should be used with caution in patients suffering from heart problems such as coronary heart disease, arrythmias (irregular heartbeat), QT prolongation, Torsade’s De pointes (a specific type of raised heart rate), low blood pressure or low blood volume. Consult your doctor for advice.
OTHERS
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION is not recommended for use if you:
- or anyone in your family, are susceptible to rapid rise in body temperature during anaesthesia (a condition known as malignant hyperthermia)
- are contraindicated to general anaesthesia
Before receiving ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION inform your doctor if you have:
- mitochondrial disease
- increased intracranial pressure (increase in pressure in brain)
- Duchenne muscular dystrophy (inherited muscular weakness)
- myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness)
- a disease or illness which is not related to condition for which you are undergoing surgery (Ex. severe headache, nausea, vomiting, neuromuscular disease)
- cancer
- diabetes
- weakness
- previously been given an inhaled anaesthetic, especially in the last 3 months
- reacted badly after previous administration of ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION or other similar anaesthetics (Ex. development of jaundice, fever, liver or blood problems)
Use in Paediatrics:
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION should be used with caution in children as it may cause increase in saliva flow and respiratory secretions and cause laryngospasm (spasm of vocal cord). Consult your child’s doctor for advice.
Use in Geriatrics:
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION should be used with caution in elderly patients aged above 65 years of age as it may require dose adjustments. Consult your doctor for advice.
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before administration of ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- medicines used for management of high blood pressure and heart diseases (Ex. labetalol, acebutolol, atenolol, nifedipine, verapamil, amlodipine)
- opioids such as codeine, fentanyl, tramadol (used for management of severe pain)
- zolpidem, zopiclone (medicines used for management of insomnia)
- epinephrine, isoprenaline, ephedrine, norepinephrine (medicines for management of hypersensitivity, heart diseases, respiratory problems, etc.)
- amphetamine, dextroamphetamine (medicines used for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder)
- ephedrine (used for decongestion)
- isoniazid (used for management of tuberculosis)
- phenelzine, selegiline, isocarboxazid, St. John’s Wort (medicines used for management of depression)
- succinylcholine, atracurium, pancuronium, rocuronium, vecuronium (muscle relaxants used in anaesthesia)
- inhalational anaesthetics, such as N2O (used in anaesthesia)
- disulfiram (used to manage alcohol addiction)
Overdosage:
ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION will be administered to you only by a doctor or a nurse in a hospital and so it is unlikely to receive an overdose. However, consult your doctor or nurse if you experience any unusual symptoms after ISIFRANE 250 LIQUID FOR INHALATION administration such as hypotension (low blood pressure) and respiratory depression or cessation of breathing.
