INTRODUCTION
RCIFAX SUSPENSION contains Rifaximin which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used in adults and in children (aged 2 years or above) to manage infectious diarrhea. Infectious diarrhea is a stomach condition caused due to intestinal infections. It causes severe diarrhea which may be presented with stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting or fever.
Rifaximin is an intestinal antibiotic. It kills the susceptible bacteria that causes infection by blocking the actions of certain enzymes in the bacteria that is required for its survival. As a result, it stops the growth and multiplication of the harmful bacteria in the gut and controls diarrhea.
Take RCIFAX SUSPENSION for the stipulated duration instructed by your doctor even if you feel better during the midway of the therapy. Inform your doctor if you can’t notice any improvement in your condition or if you feel worse after 3 days of therapy.
RCIFAX SUSPENSION is not recommended for use in patients with bloody diarrhea or diarrhea accompanied by fever and in patients passing unformed (soft or liquid) stools for more than 8 times a day. It is also not suitable for use in patients having any stomach problems (such as constipation, vomiting, or stomach pain due to blockage in the gut).
Inform your doctor before taking RCIFAX SUSPENSION if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or breastfeeding as a precaution. RCIFAX SUSPENSION may cause pink or reddish discoloration of urine. This usually disappears after discontinuation of the therapy. However, consult your doctor if it bothers you.
Other most common side effects of taking RCIFAX SUSPENSION are headache, flatulence, stomach pain, constipation, urge to empty bowels and fever. Contact your doctor if any of these side effect worsens.

HOW RCIFAX SUSPENSION WORKS
RCIFAX SUSPENSION is an intestinal antibiotic. It kills the susceptible bacteria by blocking the actions of certain enzymes (bacterial DNA-dependent RNA polymerase) in the bacteria that is required for its survival. As a result, it stops the growth and multiplication of harmful bacteria in the gut and controls diarrhea.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take RCIFAX SUSPENSION as advised by your physician. Shake well before use. Your doctor will decide the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and severity of the infection. Do not stop taking RCIFAX SUSPENSION even if you feel better during the midway of the therapy, as it may worsen your condition.
SIDE EFFECTS OF RCIFAX SUSPENSION
COMMON
- headache
- flatulence, stomach pain, constipation, diarrhea
- urgency to empty bowels
- nausea, vomiting
- involuntary and painful or ineffective straining
- fever
UNCOMMON
- thrush, cold sores, inflammation or infection of the nose and throat
- abnormal white blood cells count
- loss of appetite
- feeling sleepy
- migraine headache
- hot flushes
- cough, dry throat, blocked nose
- changes in taste
- back pain, muscle pain, weakness or cramps, neck pain
- frequent or excessive urination
- chills, cold sweat, increased sweating, flu-like illness
RARE
Stop taking RCIFAX SUSPENSION and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- severe allergic reaction (such as skin rash, itching, shortness of breath, wheezing, rapid heartbeat, swelling of the mouth, face, ankles or any other part of the body, extreme tiredness, dizziness or feeling faint)
- severe uncontrollable diarrhea
- bloody urine or red discoloration of urine
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea or Vomiting:
Take RCIFAX SUSPENSION along with, or just after meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Stick on to simple healthy foods. Consult your doctor if your nausea worsens.
Constipation:
Eat more fibre rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and cereals. Drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly. Consult your doctor if this side effect bothers you.
Headache:
Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.
Diarrhea:
Hydrate yourself by drinking plenty of fluids, such as water or fruit juices. Consuming ORS can also be beneficial. Do not self-manage diarrhea on your own. Consult your doctor if your diarrhea becomes uncontrollable or if you see blood in your stools.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY
RCIFAX SUSPENSION is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless considered clearly necessary by the physician. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
BREASTFEEDING
RCIFAX SUSPENSION should be used with caution in breastfeeding women. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do not drive or operate any heavy tools or machines if you feel dizzy or drowsy after taking RCIFAX SUSPENSION.
ALLERGY
Do not take RCIFAX SUSPENSION if you are allergic to rifaximin or to similar types of antibiotics (such as rifampicin or rifabutin).
OTHERS
RCIFAX SUSPENSION is not recommended for use if you have:
- a blockage in your intestine (causing constipation, stomach pain, and vomiting)
- fever
- bloody stools
- passed 8 or more unformed stools in the last 24 hours
Use in pediatrics:
RCIFAX SUSPENSION should be used in children (aged 2 years or above) only if prescribed by the physician. Therefore, consult your doctor for advice before taking it.
Use in geriatrics:
RCIFAX SUSPENSION should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years or above). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug-Drug Interaction:
Before taking RCIFAX SUSPENSION, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following:
- cyclosporin (a medicine to suppress the body’s immune system)
- warfarin (a medicine used to prevent blood clotting)
- oral contraceptives (used to prevent pregnancy) Ex. drospirenone, ethinyl estradiol
- activated charcoal (used to manage wind or diarrhoea)
Overdosage:
If you or anyone else accidentally took more RCIFAX SUSPENSION, consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital.
