INTRODUCTION ABOUT RIFAXIGYL M TABLET
RIFAXIGYL
M TABLET is a combination of Metronidazole and Rifaximin which belongs
to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used in the
management of stomach and intestine infections causing diarrhoea.
RIFAXIGYL
M TABLET should not be used if the patient has fever, blood in the
stools, blockage of bowel, passed 8 or more unformed stools in last 24
hours. RIFAXIGYL M TABLET has to be used with caution in patients having
liver problems, disease related to nervous system and patients
undergoing dialysis.
RIFAXIGYL M TABLET is not recommended for
use in pregnant and breast-feeding women. Avoid the use of alcohol while
taking RIFAXIGYL M TABLET and for 48 hours after finishing your course
as it may cause undesirable effects.
RIFAXIGYL M TABLET is not
recommended for use in children and adolescents (under 18 years of age)
and it should be used with caution in elderly patients.
The most
common side effects of taking RIFAXIGYL M TABLET are headache, abdominal
bloating and pain, constipation, diarrhoea, urgency to empty your
bowels, nausea and vomiting. Consult your doctor if any of the side
effect worsens.

HOW RIFAXIGYL M TABLET WORKS
RIFAXIGYL
M TABLET manages stomach and intestine infections causing diarrhoea
where metronidazole and rifaximin are antibiotics that acts on the
bacteria present in the gastrointestinal region and leads to disruption
of bacterial cell which destroys the bacteria.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take
RIFAXIGYL M TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow the medicine
with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine. Your doctor
will decide the correct dose and duration of RIFAXIGYL M TABLET for you
depending upon your age, body weight and disease condition.
SIDE EFFECTS OF RIFAXIGYL M TABLET
COMMON
- headache
- wind
- abdominal problems including bloating and pain
- constipation, diarrhoea
- urgency to empty your bowels
- nausea, vomiting
- involuntary and painful or ineffective straining
- fever
UNCOMMON
- cold sore, thrush, inflammation or infection of the nose and throat
- loss of appetite, dehydration
- abnormal dreams, sleeplessness, nervousness, depressed mood
- numbness, migraine, sinus headache, drowsiness, tingling or pricking sensation
- double vision
- earache, balance problems (vertigo)
- increased blood pressure, hot flushes
- cough, dry throat, sore throat, runny nose, blocked nose
- upper abdominal pain, indigestion, intestinal movement disorder, dry lips
- abnormalities in stools (hard stools, blood in the stools, mucus in stools)
- changes in taste
- sunburn
- back pain, muscle cramps, muscle pain, neck pain, muscle weakness
- frequent and excessive urination
- frequent periods
- chills, cold sweat, increased sweating
- flu-like illness, pain
RARE
Stop taking RIFAXIGYL M TABLET and inform your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side-effects:
- stomach
pain, loss of appetite, fever, malaise, nausea, vomiting, fatigue,
vertigo (spinning sensation), jaundice, dark urine, putty or
mastic-coloured stools or itching - signs of severe allergic
reactions severe allergic reaction such as rash, hives or itchy skin,
shortness of breath, wheezing, racing heart, welling of the mouth, face,
ankles or any other body part, extreme tiredness, dizziness or feeling
faint - steven johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis
(reddish target-like spots or circular patches accompanied with central
blisters on the trunk, ulcers of the mouth, throat, nose, genitals and
eyes) - acute generalised exanthematous pustulosis characterized
by red, scaly widespread rash with bumps under the skin and blisters
with fever found on skin folds, trunk and upper extremities - encephalopathy (fever, stiff neck, headache or seeing or hearing things that aren’t there)
- yellowing of the skin and eyes which could be due to a liver problem (jaundice)
- unexpected infections, mouth ulcers, bruising, bleeding gums or severe tiredness that could be caused by a blood problem
- severe stomach pain which may radiate through to your back (pancreatitis)
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Nausea or vomiting:
Take
this medicine with or just after meals. Stick to simple meals. Avoid
eating oily, fried or spicy foods. Do not lie down or sleep immediately
after eating. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Constipation:
Take
fiber rich foods in your diet such as fresh fruits, vegetables, whole
grain cereals and drink plenty of fluids. Exercise more regularly and
stay active. Consult your doctor if the symptom does not improve.
Diarrhoea:
Drink
lot of fluids such as water to keep yourself hydrated. Avoid eating
high-fat or spicy foods. Inform your doctor if the symptom gets worse.
Stomach pain:
Try
to rest and relax. Eat and drink slowly or try to have smaller and
frequent meals. Keep a heating pad on your stomach. If the symptom does
not improve, inform your doctor.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY
RIFAXIGYL M TABLET is not recommended for use in pregnant women. Consult your doctor before taking it.
BREASTFEEDING
RIFAXIGYL
M TABLET is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women as small
traces of this medicine may pass through mother’s milk. Consult your
doctor before taking it.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Do
not drive or operate any machines if you feel drowsy, dizzy, vertigo,
confusion, hallucinations, convulsion, eyesight problems (blurred or
double vision) after taking RIFAXIGYL M TABLET.
ALCOHOL
Avoid
the use of alcohol while taking RIFAXIGYL M TABLET and for 48 hours
after finishing your course as it may cause side effects such nausea,
vomiting, stomach pain, hot flushes, very fast or uneven heartbeat and
headache.
KIDNEY
RIFAXIGYL
M TABLET should be used with caution in patients undergoing kidney
dialysis. Consult your doctor before taking RIFAXIGYL M TABLET.
LIVER
RIFAXIGYL
M TABLET should be used with caution in patients having liver disease.
Consult your doctor before taking RIFAXIGYL M TABLET.
ALLERGY
Do
not take RIFAXIGYL M TABLET if you are allergic to Rifaximin,
Metronidazole or nitroimidazoles (such as tinidazole) or similar type of
antibiotics (such as rifampicin or rifabutin).
OTHERS
RIFAXIGYL M TABLET is not recommended for use if you:
- have fever
- are having blood in the stools
- have blockage of bowel
- have passed 8 or more unformed stools in last 24 hours
Before taking RIFAXIGYL M TABLET tell your doctor if you:
- have diseases related to nervous system
Use in paediatrics:
RIFAXIGYL
M TABLET is not recommended for use in children and adolescents (under
18 years of age). Consult your child’s doctor for advice.
Use in geriatrics:
RIFAXIGYL
M TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients especially at
higher doses. Consult your doctor before taking it.
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug–Drug Interactions:
Before taking RIFAXIGYL M TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines:
- medicines used to supress body’s immune system (Ex. cyclosporin)
- medicines used to manage blood clotting (Ex. warfarin)
- oral contraceptives such as ethinylestradiol and norethindrone (used to manage pregnancy)
- lithium (used to manage mental illness)
- 5-fluorouracil (used for cancer)
- busulfan (used to manage leukaemia)
- activated charcoal (used to manage wind or diarrhoea)
- phenobarbital or phenytoin (used to control epilepsy)
- disulfiram (used to manage chronic alcoholism)
Overdosage:
If
you or anyone else accidentally takes too much of RIFAXIGYL M TABLET,
consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital.
