Introduction About TRYPTINOL

TRYPTINOL is used in the management of depression, neuropathic pain and tension type headache or migraine in adults. It contains a medicine called Amitriptyline which is an antidepressant medicine. It enhances your mood by boosting the levels of a chemical called serotonin in your brain.

TRYPTINOL must be used under medical supervision. Take this medicine for the duration exactly as advised by your doctor. Do not stop therapy abruptly or overuse this medicine for prolonged periods without consulting your doctor. Regularly visit your doctor and perform the medical tests suggested by your doctor to achieve better results.

Avoid concomitant usage of TRYPTINOL with other antidepressants like MAOIs to avoid potential drug-drug interactions. Do not take if you have taken any MAOIs within the last 14 days without consulting your doctor. It should not be used in patients with severe liver problems, recent heart attack, or heart problems.

Before taking TRYPTINOL, inform your doctor if you have imbalances of potassium and magnesium levels in the body and other mental illness like bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. You must also inform your doctor if you are scheduled for any surgery in the upcoming days, have diabetes, thyroid disorders, epilepsy, narrow angle glaucoma, enlarged prostate and blockage or stenosis in the gut as a precaution.

TRYPTINOL should be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding only if it is considered clearly necessary by the physician.

The most common side effects of taking TRYPTINOL are excessive sleepiness/drowsiness, dizziness, headache, tiredness, dry mouth, constipation, excessive thirst, excessive sweating, weight gain, changes in taste, confusion, lack of attention, unable to walk properly, low sex-drive, problems with erection, tingling and numbness of arms or legs and problems in urination. Consult your doctor if they trouble you.

Also, patients or caregivers must close monitor the patients and inform the doctor immediately if the patients develop suicidal thoughts, mania or mood changes after taking TRYPTINOL.

How TRYPTINOL Works

TRYPTINOL is a tricyclic antidepressant. It works by increasing the levels of certain neurotransmitters in the brain, primarily serotonin and norepinephrine by inhibiting their reuptake into nerve cells, which helps to improve mood and relieve symptoms of depression.

How to use TRYPTINOL

  • Take TRYPTINOL as advised by your physician.
  • Swallow the medicine with a glass of water.
  • Do not crush or chew the medicine.
  • Do not stop taking TRYPTINOL without consulting your doctor.
  • Your doctor will decide the correct dosage and duration of therapy based on your age, body weight and health condition.

Side Effects Of TRYPTINOL

Like all medicines, TRYPTINOL may cause few side effects although not everybody gets them

Common side effects of TRYPTINOL:

  • suicidal thoughts (thoughts of harming or killing themselves), anxiety
  • mania (profuse and rapidly changing ideas, exaggerated gaiety and excessive physical activity)

TRYPTINOL should be used during pregnancy only if it is considered clearly necessary by the physician. Your doctor will prescribe this medicine only if it benefits the mother and justifies the risk to the fetus.

Breastfeeding

TRYPTINOL may pass through breast milk. Therefore, a decision should be made whether to discontinue nursing or to discontinue the drug, taking into account the importance of the drug to the mother.

Driving and Using Machines

Use with Caution

TRYPTINOL may cause dizziness and drowsiness. Therefore, do not drive or handle any heavy tools or machineries until your concentration becomes clear after taking this medicine.

Alcohol

Liver

Heart Disease

TRYPTINOL is not recommended for use in patients who suffered a recent heart attack or have heart problems such as disturbances in heart rhythm, or coronary artery disease. It should be used with caution in patients with heart problems such as slow heart rate or difficulty in pumping blood, etc.

Use In Pediatrics

TRYPTINOL is generally not recommended for use in children and adolescents (aged below 18 years). However, your doctor may prescribe it to you after considering the risks and benefits.

Use In Geriatrics

Monitoring required

TRYPTINOL should be used with extreme caution in elderly patients as it could increase of fall due to its tendency to cause dizziness and hypotension. Therefore, caregivers should closely monitor the elderly patients.

Others

TRYPTINOL is not recommended for use if you have:

  • taken other antidepressants called MAOIs within the last 14 days
  • moclobemide the day before

Before taking TRYPTINOL, inform your doctor if you:

  • have any underlying health condition that causes low potassium or magnesium levels in the body
  • have a high level of potassium in your blood
  • are scheduled for any surgery in the upcoming days
  • have an overactive thyroid gland or take thyroid medication
  • have bipolar disorder
  • have narrow angle glaucoma
  • have epilepsy or a previous history of fits
  • have difficulty in passing urine
  • have an enlarged prostate
  • have disorders of thyroid gland
  • have schizophrenia
  • have pylorus stenosis (narrowing of the gastric outlet) and paralytic ileus (blocked intestine)
  • have diabetes

Interactions

A. Drug-Drug interactions:

  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (such as isocarboxazid, phenelzine, selegiline, and tranylcypromine, moclobemide)
  • Cisapride (used for gastric ulcers)
  • Selegiline (an antiparkinsonian drug)
  • Sympathetic agents (such as adrenaline, ephedrine, isoprenaline, noradrenaline, phenylephrine and phenylpropanolamine present in cough or cold medicine)
  • Antihypertensive medicines (such as diltiazem, verapamil, guanethidine, betanidine, clonidine reserpine and methyldopa)
  • Anticholinergic drugs (such as atropine, hyoscyamine)
  • Thioridazine (an antipsychotic agent for schizophrenia)
  • Tramadol (a painkiller)
  • Antifungal agents (such as fluconazole, terbinafine, ketoconazole, and itraconazole)
  • Sedatives and hyponotics
  • Other antidepressants (such as SSRIs (fluoxetine, paroxetine, fluvoxamine), duloxetine and bupropion)
  • Buprenorphine/Opioids, methadone (pain killers)
  • Cardiac drugs (such as beta blockers and antiarrhythmics)
  • Cimetidine (used for stomach ulcers)
  • Methylphenidate (used for ADHD)
  • Ritonavir (an anti-HIV agent)
  • Oral contraceptives (birth control pills)
  • Rifampicin (used for infections)
  • Antiepileptic agents (such as phenytoin, carbamazepine, valproic acid)
  • St. John´s Wort (hypericum perforatum) an herbal antidepressant
  • Thyroid medication
  • Anti-allergic medicines (such as astemizole and terfenadine)
  • Medicines used for some mental illnesses (such as pimozide and sertindole)
  • Halofantrine (an antimalarial agent)
  • Diuretics (such as furosemide)

Overdosage:

If you or anyone else accidentally taken too much of TRYPTINOL consult your doctor immediately or visit the nearby hospital straight away. Symptoms of overdosage might include dilated pupils, fast or irregular heartbeats, difficulties in passing urine, dry mouth, fits, fever, agitation, confusion, hallucinations, uncontrolled movements, weak pulse, pallor, blue discolouration of the skin, slow heart rate, extreme drowsiness and abnormal heart rhythm.
