INTRODUCTION ABOUT BETNESOL N E/E DROPS

BETNESOL
N E/E DROPS is a combination of Betamethasone and Neomycin which
belongs to the group of medicines called Corticosteroids and Antibiotics
respectively. It is used to manage inflammation and infections of the
eyes and ears. It is typically used in conditions which involves
inflammation along with the risk of infection such as during injury or
post-surgery.

Use this medicine exactly as instructed by your
physician. Misuse or overuse of this medicine may lead to unwanted side
effects (such as blurred vision or vision impairment). If there is no
improvement in your condition even after using this medicine for 7 days,
consult your doctor for advice. If you wear soft contact lenses, remove
the lens before applying BETNESOL N E/E DROPS and wait for at least 15
minutes before reinsertion.

During management with BETNESOL N E/E
DROPS, your doctor will regularly monitor your eyes for intraocular
pressure, cataracts and for infections as a precaution. Before using
BETNESOL N E/E DROPS inform your doctor if you have severe viral or
fungal ear/eye infections. You must also inform your doctor if you have
glaucoma, perforations (holes) in the ear drum, tuberculosis, dry eyes
or damaged skin or wounds around the areas of application.

Do not
use BETNESOL N E/E DROPS if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. The most
common side effects of using BETNESOL N E/E DROPS are temporary burning
sensation and blurring of vision, headache, dizziness, slowing growth
and taste changes. Consult your doctor if any of these side effect
worsens.

USES OF BETNESOL N E/E DROPS

  • Manage eye/ear infection and inflammation

HOW BETNESOL N E/E DROPS WORKS

BETNESOL
N E/E DROPS contains two medicines namely, Betamethasone and Neomycin.
Betamethasone is a steroid medication. It blocks the release of certain
chemicals in the body (such as prostaglandins) that causes inflammation,
redness and swelling. When applied topically on the eyes or ears, it
reduces redness, soreness, pain, itching and swelling.

Neomycin
is an antibiotic. When applied topically on the eyes or ears, it kills
the susceptible bacteria that causes infection. Collectively, this
medicine reduces inflammation and infection of the eyes and ears.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE

Use BETNESOL N E/E DROPS as advised by your physician. It is for topical use only.

For Eyes: Tilt
your head slightly backwards and gently pull your lower eyelid. Instil
few drops of this medicine into the eyes and close your eyes for 2
minutes. Repeat the same for the other eye if required. If you wear soft
contact lenses, remove the lens before applying BETNESOL N E/E DROPS
and wait for at least 15 minutes before reinsertion.

For Ears: Gently instil few drops of this medicine into the affected ear(s).

Wash
your hands before and after application. Do not touch the tip of the
container with your eyes, eyelids, areas around your eyes, outer ears or
using fingers, to avoid contamination.

Your doctor will decide
the correct dose and duration of therapy for you depending upon your
age, body weight and health condition. If there is no improvement in
your condition even after using this medicine for 7 days, consult your
doctor for advice.

SIDE EFFECTS OF BETNESOL N E/E DROPS

COMMON

  • Burning sensation following application
  • Temporary blurring of vision
  • Slowing growth
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Headache, dizziness
  • Nausea
  • Skin itching
  • Changes in taste
  • Nose bleeds

RARE

Stop using BETNESOL N E/E DROPS and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:

  • severe eye pain, redness, irritation and vision changes
  • blurred vision or other visual disturbances
  • abnormal eye sensation, stinging or pain in the eye, swelling and redness around the eyes
  • clouding of the eyes (cataracts)
  • enlarged pupils, drooping eyelids
  • skin irritation, redness and itching
  • problems
    in adrenal gland (causing low blood pressure, dizziness, fever, runny
    nose, painful itchy skin, eye redness, muscle pain, joint pain and
    weight loss)

HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS

Burning or stinging of eyes:

Wash
your eyes with plain cold water. Place an ice pack on your eye to ease
the irritation. Avoid straining your eyes by looking at mobile phones,
laptops or television. Wear protective eyeglasses while going outdoors.

Headache:  

Rest
and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as
water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead
can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could
aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.

Blurred vision:

Close
your eyes and relax. Do not strain your eyes by looking at mobile
phones, laptops, or television. Avoid driving or operating any heavy
tools or machines while your vision is blur. Consult your doctor if you
experience blurred vision for a prolonged period.

WARNING & PRECAUTIONS

PREGNANCY

BETNESOL
N E/E DROPS is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless
considered necessary by the physician. Therefore, consult your doctor
before using it.

BREASTFEEDING

BETNESOL
N E/E DROPS is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless
considered necessary by the physician. Therefore, consult your doctor
before using it.

DRIVING AND USING MACHINES

Do
not drive or operate any heavy tools or machinery if you experience
blurred vision or light-headedness after using BETNESOL N E/E DROPS.

ALLERGY

Do not use BETNESOL N E/E DROPS if you are allergic to Betamethasone or Neomycin.

OTHERS

BETNESOL N E/E DROPS is not recommended for use if you:

  • have severe viral eye infections that produces sticky pus
  • have severe viral or fungal infections of the ear or nose
  • have ulcers in the eyes
  • have glaucoma
  • wear soft contact lenses
  • have a perforated ear drum

Before using BETNESOL N E/E DROPS inform your doctor if you:

  • have a mitochondrial disease (a disease that restricts energy supply to the cells)
  • have been managed with a steroid medicine recently
  • have eye redness for which the cause is unknown
  • have tuberculosis infection
  • have thinning of tissues surrounding the eyes (such as corneal or scleral thinning)
  • have damaged skin or open wounds at the site of application
  • have dry eyes or corneal problems

Use in pediatrics:

BETNESOL
N E/E DROPS is not recommended for use in children and adolescents
(aged below 18 years) unless prescribed by a physician. Therefore,
consult your doctor before administration.

Use in geriatrics:

BETNESOL N E/E DROPS should be used with caution in elderly patients. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.

INTERACTIONS

A, Drug-Drug interactions:

Before using BETNESOL N E/E DROPS, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:

  • Medicines used to manage HIV infection (such as ritonavir, cobicistat)
