INTRODUCTION ABOUT RCIFAX 550MG TABLET
RCIFAX 550MG TABLET contains Rifaximin which belongs to the group of medicines called Antibiotics. It is used in adults with liver diseases to reduce the recurrence of episodes of overt hepatic encephalopathy. Overt hepatic encephalopathy is a neurological disorder caused due to accumulation of toxins in the blood because of liver damage (such as liver cirrhosis). It is characterized by recurrent episodes of hepatic encephalopathy (such as confusion, muscle problems, shaking and difficulty in speech) within the last 6 months.
RCIFAX 550MG TABLET is also used in adults to manage irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common gastrointestinal disease that affects the large intestine. It is characterized by altered bowel habits with persistent stomach pain or discomfort, diarrhea and bloating.
Rifaximin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used for gastrointestinal and liver diseases. It manages hepatic encephalopathy by managing the growth of toxin-producing bacteria in the digestive tract. This reduces toxin accumulation in the blood and manages the onset or recurrence of disorders caused due to toxin accumulation (such as hepatic encephalopathy). It also manages diarrhea associated with irritable bowel syndrome by killing the susceptible bacteria in the gut that causes infections.
Before taking RCIFAX 550MG TABLET inform your doctor if you have any liver problems. You must also inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before taking RCIFAX 550MG TABLET.
RCIFAX 550MG TABLET may cause pink or reddish discoloration of urine. This is usually harmless and disappears after discontinuation of the therapy. However, consult your doctor if it bothers you.
Other most common side effects of taking RCIFAX 550MG TABLET are dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, shortness of breath, stomach pain, accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity (ascites), diarrhoea, and depressed mood. Contact your doctor if any of these side effect worsens. Also inform your doctor if you experience severe diarrhea even after stopping management with RCIFAX 550MG TABLET before several months.

It is used in adults to:

- Manage irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhoea
HOW RCIFAX 550MG TABLET WORKS
RCIFAX 550MG TABLET is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used for gastrointestinal and liver diseases. This reduces toxin accumulation in the blood and manages the onset or recurrence of disorders caused due to toxin accumulation (such as hepatic encephalopathy). It also manages diarrhea associated with irritable bowel syndrome by killing the susceptible bacteria in the gut that causes infections.
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
Take RCIFAX 550MG TABLET as advised by your physician. Swallow RCIFAX 550MG TABLET with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the medicine.
Your doctor will decide the correct dose of RCIFAX 550MG TABLET and duration of therapy for you depending upon your age, body weight and severity of the infection. Do not stop taking RCIFAX 550MG TABLET without consulting your doctor even if you feel better during the midway of the therapy.
SIDE EFFECTS OF RCIFAX 550MG TABLET
COMMON
- dizziness, headache
- shortness of breath
- nausea or vomiting
- stomach pain or bloating/swelling
- diarrhoea, constipation
- depressed mood
- skin rash or itching
- muscle cramps and joint pain
- swelling of ankles, feet, or fingers
UNCOMMON
- yeast infections (such as thrush)
- urinary infection (such as cystitis)
- anaemia
- loss of appetite
- hyperkalaemia (increased blood potassium levels)
- feeling confused or anxious
- feeling sleepy
- unsteady posture
- loss of memory and concentration
- reduced sense to touch
- convulsions
- hot flushes
- fluid around the lungs (pleural effusion)
- dry mouth
- needing to pass urine more often than usual
- difficulty or pain while passing urine
- fever
RARE
- chest infections including pneumonia
- cellulitis (inflammation of tissue under skin), bruising
- upper respiratory tract infections (nose, mouth, throat)
- dehydration (body water loss)
- changes in blood pressure
- constant breathing problems (such as chronic bronchitis)
- feeling weak
Stop taking RCIFAX 550MG TABLET and contact your doctor immediately if you experience any of the following side effects:
- oesophageal varices (bleeding from swollen blood vessels in your throat)
- severe diarrhoea
- severe allergic reaction (such as skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, tongue and throat, difficulty in breathing or swallowing)
HOW TO MANAGE SIDE EFFECTS
Constipation
Eat more fibre rich foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables, and cereals. Drink plenty of water. Exercise more regularly. Consult your doctor if this side effect bothers you.
Diarrhea
Hydrate yourself by drinking plenty of fluids, such as water or fruit juices. Consuming ORS can also be beneficial. Do not self-manage diarrhea on your own. Consult your doctor if your diarrhea becomes uncontrollable or if you see blood in your stools.
Headache
Rest and relax. Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids such as water or electrolytes. Applying a pain-relieving balm on your forehead can be beneficial. Do not consume excessive alcohol, as it could aggravate your headache. Consult your doctor if your headache worsens.
Nausea And Vomiting
Take RCIFAX 550MG TABLET along with, or just after meals. Avoid eating oil rich or spicy foods. Stick on to simple healthy foods. Consult your doctor if your nausea worsens.
WARNING & PRECAUTIONS
PREGNANCY

It is not known whether the use of RCIFAX 550MG TABLET can affect the growth of an unborn baby. Therefore, RCIFAX 550MG TABLET should not be used in pregnant women unless considered necessary by the physician.
BREASTFEEDING

It is not known whether RCIFAX 550MG TABLET can pass through breast milk or not. Therefore, RCIFAX 550MG TABLET should not be used in breastfeeding women unless considered necessary by the physician.
DRIVING AND USING MACHINES
Use with Caution
Do not drive or operate any machines if you feel dizzy after taking RCIFAX 550MG TABLET.
LIVER
Use with Caution
RCIFAX 550MG TABLET should be used with caution in patients with severe liver problems. Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
ALLERGY
Contraindicated
Do not take RCIFAX 550MG TABLET if you are allergic to rifaximin or to similar types of antibiotics (such as rifampicin or rifabutin).
USE IN PEDIATRICS
Contraindicated
RCIFAX 550MG TABLET is generally not recommended for use in children and adolescents (under 18 years of age) due to lack of safety data. However, consult your doctor before taking it.
USE IN GERIATRICS
Use with Caution
RCIFAX 550MG TABLET should be used with caution in elderly patients (aged 65 years or above). Therefore, consult your doctor before taking it.
OTHERS
RCIFAX 550MG TABLET is not recommended for use if you:
- have blockage in the intestines
INTERACTIONS
A. Drug-Drug interactions:
Before taking RCIFAX 550MG TABLET, inform your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines such as:
- antibiotics (used to manage infections)
- cyclosporin (a medicine to suppress the body’s immune system)
- warfarin (a medicine used to manage blood clotting)
- oral contraceptives (used to manage pregnancy) Ex. drospirenone, ethinyl Estradiol
- midazolam (a medicine used to reduce anxiety and to induce sleep)
- antiepileptics (used to manage epilepsy) Ex. carbamazepine, phenytoin
- antiarrhythmics (used to manage abnormal heartbeat) Ex. digitalis, amiodarone, flecainide
Overdosage:
